Bold as brass: why a brass band suits so many events

Tuba Bell - brass band

From brass ensembles and full marching bands to fanfare teams and solo trumpeters. There’s no denying it, brass is big, brash, beautiful and … back!

Getting down to brass tacks …

If your only experience of brass bands comes courtesy of the film Brassed Off, you’re likely to have a traditional perception. If you’re of a certain age, you may even be hearing The Floral Dance or “That music from the Hovis advert”. But there’s so much more to brass than that. At Matters Musical we’re on a mission to oust all those out-dated notions in a single blast of a trumpet. Here are a few brass facts to get you thinking outside the box:

  • Any event/ any space – Indoors or outdoors, there are brass players to match almost any occasion. Whether a bride, bigwig or birthday boy, a fanfare team will always win first place for regal entrances. Large brass bands go down a storm in concert halls, outdoor festivals and county shows. Or, for dinners, receptions and garden parties, a small brass ensemble is sure to provide the perfect accompaniment.
  • Impact – Marching bands are certainly attention-grabbing but don’t forget, a soloist can be equally captivating. What could be more poignant than a lone trumpeter playing the Last Post at a memorial service or funeral?
  • Music variety – Most modern brass bands will play a mixture of traditional, classical and modern and pop music, including film scores and music from the musicals.

Brass? It’s a no-brainer!

At Matters Musical we have a great bunch of talented and experienced brass players, all eager to share their own special brand of brass music! Here are just a few ideas to tempt you:

  • Need to add some musical majesty to your occasion? The Trumpeters of London are a fanfare team who provide soloists to ten-piece ensembles. If their long silver clarion trumpets aren’t impressive enough, timpani and percussion can also be added. The group is also available to perform as a brass quintet, using more conventional brass instruments to play a selection of light classical background music for receptions and dinners.
